3 of us left the house at 345 am for the sat opener to block off a section of Seward County public where I saw good numbers of pheasants last year. It’s a large field (a quarter section I think, 160 acres), with two parking lots, so if we could get to one lot first, we’d deter the others from parking there and we’d have a good section to walk first.
Got there at 520 am, and didn’t see anyone till about 545… a contingent of 3 trucks showed up, but after pulling in and chatting for a few minutes, they went to the other side of the field. We jumped in at daylight, 740 or so, and hunted hard and left at 915 with 6 roosters, 2 others we had downed but lost… and probably 75-100 seen on the day… half and half roosters & hens. Couldn’t believe all the birds out there… even with a large uncut corn field bordering this one. About ¼ of this field is a large duck marsh… saw probably 15-20 groups of ducks buzzing around and 2 flocks of canadas zooming south.
Never met back up w/ the other group, but they seemed to shoot more than we did. Although I didn’t notice once that one of the idiots was sky busting at ducks buzzing 100 yards high. Maybe they did more of that, but I only saw it once.
Anyway, very successful opener. Dog did pretty well… one of the lost birds she had caught but then coughed it up for just a sec and it half-flew / jumped away into the thick stuff. Either way, she got up birds that we would have walked by. Gotta love a 6 rooster day on public |
